Oddly charming, easygoing, and more than a little overconfident, Irvine is Galbadia Garden's most notorious, funloving cowboy. He claims to be the best shooter in all of the Gardens combined, and just about anywhere else, which he'll gladly attempt to prove if anyone questions him.
Irvine is a party animal in the truest sense of the word and loves being the center of attention. He loves dancing, mostly in crowds, and he's quite good at it. He has very little respect for other people's personaly boundaries, and he'll do almost anything for a laugh, usually at someone else's expense (example: wrangling Xu in the middle of the Balamb cafeteria). Not exactly a "manwhore" as he's often called, he'll always defend himself by stating he merely "enjoys company", though "company" tends to end up taking the walk of shame at night's end. However, he retains a bit of modesty in reguards to his fun, claiming that he's not actually "playing around" as much as everyone thinks he is.
Sometimes he can be seen as a bit shallow or absentminded, failing to take into reguards the feelings of others at certain times. This isn't done purposefully, as Irvine doesn't exactly enjoy harming people, but he can be far more hurtful than he realizes. In these cases, should he become aware of what he's doing, he'll almost always apologize.
Some reguard him as being a little lazy when it comes to school work, as he sometimes neglects to show up to his early morning classes, believing that hang overs indeed constitute the use of sick days. However, he always manages to get his work done, and his scores remain quite high.
He has a particularly soft spot for Selphie, but in a playful, brotherly sort of way. He doesn't hesitate to call her his best friend, and she's the main reason why he decided to travel to Squenix in the first place.
Irvine never really plans to stay in one place for too long, though he's on the lookout for a place to call "home" someday. When he leaves a city, he'll leave everything behind, with the exception of what he can fit into his duffle. His hat is his good luck charm, and he tends to do odd things in reguards to it, such as rubbing it, or kissing it for good fortune. You'll rarely see him without it.
Lastly, while he's a social clown and cocky charmer, he's incredibly loyal to his friends, especially those he grew up in the orphanage with. He'll do just about anything for them on any level, though that also means they get a bit extra in the teasing department.
Background:
Irvine grew up on a small farm with his mother and two sisters before the sorceress wars. While he was very tiny, he proudly referred to himself as the man of the house, often getting a slew of giggles from his family and many of the neighbors. Still, he did his part in the chores around the farm. When the war came, he was sent to the Kramer orphanage by his family for safekeeping, promising to return for him once the fighting had ceased. They never did and were assumed dead. Irvine was taken in as a more permanent resident to the lighthouse building.
He grew up with a group of other orphans, and found himself a new family among them. His closest childhood friend was a spunky little girl named Selphie Tilmitt. However, being a happy and well adjusted child, Irvine was one of the first to be adopted. However, his new home turned out to be less than stellar as the stress from the war weighed heavy on his new family, and after just a few short years, the adoption was revoked. Sent to Galbadia Garden when he was ten, Irvine excelled at gunsmanship. Sharp shooting became his favorite passtime and soon, he became legendary on the Garden campus.
Upon meeting up with Squall and the others, for the longest time he was the only one who remembered their past in the orphanage. So, in silence, he enjoyed their time together.
After the fall of Ultimecia, Irvine worked for about half a year at a Chocobo farm before moving to Deling, taking up a bartender position in an underground club called "The Belhelmel". After a while he began to miss his old friends, and two weeks before his first year anniversary at the club, he made his way back to Balamb. Upon arriving, he was informed that most of his old crew had crossed the Nexus to Squenix. His decision required very little thought, and soon he was traveling as well, hopefully to meet up with everyone.
